Now All The Swords Are Blunt was by far the hardest to mix, there are many many layers, and there is a complexity to the song structure. I wanted the beats to have a real live passionate forward thrust, but I wanted to not compromise complex guitar parts. It took months to find the right balance, and a lot of that was achieved by stripping the song down at key moments.
This song is an intense meditation on struggle, in this case between people, between friends, between lovers. All the fighting, generally useless and wearing "Now all is said and done, now all the swords are blunt".
On the other hand, if you "tend your sprawling garden", your "tools were sharpened". Less time struggling with others, be they family or friends or a lover, and more time working on the internal, that's the idea.
It's yet another song that deals with confusion and struggle and the path through it.
Lightning comes up yet again as imagery, one of my favorite metaphors… it usually stands for inspiration. When you get your hands on lightning is when you are writing a song or doing something inspired, those tiny moments in between the normalcy of days are so so important.
lyrics
It's time to bend again, befriend the wind again.
The cards are dealt my friend, a hand for you to win.
The silver linings round the storm clouds have been polished…
and when you finished tending to your sprawling garden,
your tools were sharpened.
Predicted right again, you're finally on the mend.
It's time to trade the war for a door inside a door.
It's time to borrow rays of light from silenced fires!
And when you get your hands on lightning, hold it tightly, day and nightly.
Now all is said and done, now all the swords are blunt.
You changed your consequence into necessary solace.
With all your wandered paths along the highway
you'll get to tell them all "at least I did it my way".
Infinite minutes tick while wishes are regarded, the soft is hardened.
And when you get your hands on lightning hold it tightly, day and nightly.

Aaron Ross is one of my favorite songwriters, and this album was recorded at the apex of my time in Nevada City, CA. I'm even on a couple of tracks, but that's not why it's great. It's EPIC. Luke Janela
