about

I remember distinctly writing and even recording most of this in a suburb of Washington D.C. Big thunder storms every afternoon, and a sense of being deep into the road trip.

Also, my guitar, (named Xing Ped, yes it had a name) which I bought with saved up summer job money when I was 18, was stolen from a campsite in Virginia Beach a few days earlier. It was devastating. My relationship to that guitar was irrational and deep and I loved it and I literally cried (a lot) when I realized it wasn't coming back to me (I still search for the same model and have even scoured Virginia Beach pawn shops online, it's pathetic how much I loved that guitar). So I spent money on a new guitar, I couldn't imagine being without one while traveling. It was a Martin guitar made of composite material. Meaning it was beautiful sounding and could handle the weather in a way that a wood guitar maybe couldn't.

Anyways. So this was a hesitant relationship I began with this new guitar and this song was written and recorded within 30 minutes of the first time I sat down to truly play it.

The lyrics I think pretty much reflect the feeling we had at that point on our epic odyssey: far from home, way out of our element, and embracing that while fearing it at the same time. We will soon be on another journey to another corner of the country and wherever we go it won't be home. That's what the song was about at the time.

Now the song means what it means to you of course, and for me it applies to the stages of life. Every year/day/minute you are out in the wilderness and shall be moving further into it. And that's good, to me.
